Rugby splits dual matches

Rugby rolled over Stanley and lost to Velva-Garrison-Max in a pair of home regional duals on Dec. 16.

Garrett Thompson, Wyatt Thompson and Michael Steen won both their matches. Josh Tank, Zach Odden, Justin Fjellanger, Michael Ostrem, Casey Johnson, Josh Guse and Brooks McClintock picked up one victory. Rugby is 2-3 in dual matches.

North Star tops M-Leeds

MINNEWAUKAN — The play of Minnewaukan-Leeds’ defense was a big reason the Lions were off to a good start, surrending 31 points per game through its first five games.

However, the Lions couldn’t contain North Star’s offense. The Bearcats used a 16-9 third quarter to take control, rolling to a 59-46 District 8 win here on Dec. 16. The game was tied at the half, but M-L struggled in the second half. Denage Braaten and Dorothia Santos scored 16 points each for the Lions. The loss dropped M-L to 4-2 overall.

Rugby downs Ryan

Rugby pulled away from Minot Ryan with a strong final quarter, earning its first home court win of the season, 55-47, on Dec. 12.

The difference came at the free throw line where the Panthers outscored Minot 18-7.

Rugby received double digit scoring from Crystal Hovland (19); Kristi Black (15) and Chelsea Halvorson (12).

The squad, however, continued to struggle from the field, shooting just 33 percent.

The victory improved the Panthers mark to 2-3 overall.

Comets defeat S-Munich

STARKWEATHER — Rolette-Wolford’s offense came alive, scoring a season-high 55 points in a 18-point district road win over Starkweather-Munich here on Dec. 11.

The Comets used a 16-4 second quarter to build a sizable lead en route to the 55-37 win. R-W’s defense got stingier as the game went along, holding the Magic Storm to juse 24 points in the final 24 minutes.

Allison Slaubaugh and Kaylee Scott each scored 10 points, and R-W had seven other players find the score sheet. The win improved the squad to 4-2 overall.

Glenburn edges Titans

GLENBURN — Annie Klebe and Taylor Stone each scored 10, but it wasn’t enough to propel Towner-Granville-Upham to a win. The Titans lost 42-37 to Glenburn here on Dec. 11.

T-G-U trailed by just a point at halftime but couldn’t get its offense going in the second half. The loss was T-G-U’s third straight and dropped its overall record to 2-4.
