Junior Gold Hockey

Rugby falls to Mayville-Portland

Senior forward Derek Jaeger’s third period goal tied the score with under five minutes to play, but Mayville-Portland regained the lead less than a minute later, and the Ice Dawgs escaped with a 4-3 Junior Gold road victory on Dec. 7 and improved to 3-0 in league play.

Rugby dominated play early, outshooting M-P 19-7 in the opening period, but only leading 2-1. “We had a lot of opportunities to score a few more, but just couldn’t get to loose pucks in front of their goal,” Rugby coach Jay McClintock Jr. said.

Leo Hoffert and Jaeger scored both those first period goals. M-P responded with better play in period two and scored twice to take a one-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Andy Brossart and Thomas Seaver split time in goal for the Ice Hawks, recording 18 saves. The loss dropped Rugby to 0-1 in league play and 0-2-1 overall.
