Titans Couldn’t Answer Bell Against Raiders
The Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) Titans football team faced the Richardton/Taylor/Hebron Raiders last week in the first round of district playoffs and fell short of victory with a 22-38 loss.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans came back to take the lead in the second quarter after the Raiders struck first but failed on the two-point conversion to take a six to nothing lead. Lane Schmitt punched in a 2-yard touchdown run and Kolter Schell converted the two-point conversion with a run to give the Titans their first and only lead of the night, 8-6.
No matter how hard the Titans fought, they just didn’t have an answer for Raiders running back Denver Colgrove, who lit up the scoreboard with four running touchdowns – the longest being an 84-yard gallop – and one touchdown as receiver when he took a screen play 45 yards to find the end-zone.
Coach Scott Thorson reflected on the game, “Saturday’s game was a tough way to end our season. We knew that we were facing a very good football team in RTH. They are well coached and were well prepared to face us. Basically, they were the better team on Saturday. We really struggled with their physical running game.” Coach continued, “They had a running back that is outstanding, and he wore on us as the game went on. I thought we were able to move the ball effectively but didn’t make plays when we needed to. Mistakes were made, and it is too late in the season to have that happen.”
“Our seniors had a very good season and outstanding careers. They have been a huge part of our program for four seasons”, said Coach Thorson
For the Titans Shayden Luna led all runners with 87 yards, followed by Schell with 76 yards, and Schmitt who had 68 yards. Schell also went 5-10 in the passing game for 131 yards and a TD. Blaine Rosencrans was his favorite target, with three receptions for 95 yards – 65 of those yards came on a touchdown strike. Schmitt added 30 yards in receiving, and Evan Burckhard added 6 yards. Luna led all returners with 108 total yards, which consisted of a 90-yard kick return.
On the defensive side Schell led all tacklers with 19 total; Schmitt and Luna had 10 tackles each; Rosencrans accounted for 8 tackles; Ethan Hetland and Burckhard each had 4 tackles; Caleb Cross, Johnathan Parisien and Miguel Juarez had 3 tackles apiece; and Andy Linstrom and Tristan Mcmahon both had 2 tackles.
Coach Thorson, in summing up the season, said, “We have progressed nicely, as a team, since August. We made improvements where we needed to. I thought we really came together well with our running attack and also defensively. Some of the less experienced players developed nicely. That gives us something to look forward to next season.”
