TGU leads tight Region race

The No. 5-ranked TGU Titans hold a slim advantage over hotly contested Region 3 in 9-Man football.

TGU improved to 7-1 with a tough 22-12 win over Divide County on Oct. 10. Colter Thorpe caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Eli Luna for the only points of the first half. The pair connected again for a 45-yard score to give the Titans a 14-0 lead. The Maroons’ rally fell short as a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns sandwiched Luna’s third touchdown pass of the game – a 6-yard strike to Lane Schmitt.

TGU is one of three Region 3 teams expected to finish the regular season 8-1 today. The Titans, St. John and Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn play opponents with a combined record of 3-21.

TGU, which lost to St. John, held the tiebreaker heading into today’s game with a point-differential high of 198. The Sioux – who lost to TGU, but beat the Woodchucks – have a point differential of 196. The Woodchucks’ difference is 178.

Comets roll through Titans

The Rolette-Wolford volleyball team dismantled TGU in a 3-0 volleyball win (25-15, 25-13, 25-13) Monday.

Junior tower Lexy Wittmayer led all players with 24 kills and eight blocks. Lynnsey Slaubaugh (Wolford) added 14 kills. Hannah Walsh (Wolford) notched a match-high 15 digs.

Angie Anderson led the Titans with six kills. R-W improved to 20-7 overall with the win. The Comets were 3-1 in Region 4 play as of Oct. 13.

R-W had a strong weekend ahead of the TGU matchup, taking second in the Rolla tournament Oct. 11.

The Comets fell 27-25, 25-14 to North Star in the final. R-W beat the hosts 3-0 (25-27, 25-11, 15-10) in a semifinal match. TGU failed to advance from pool play in the tournament and Bottineau fell in a quarterfinal matchup to Westhope-Newburg.
