Boys XC wins meet at northwood

The Rugby High School boys cross country team took first at the Hatton-Northwood-Thompson “Thunder” Invitational at Northwood Golf Course on Aug 28.

RHS senior Tanner Bernhardt won the race with a 5K?(3.1 miles) time of 17 minutes, 44 seconds. Classmate Nolan Hovland was second in 18:16.

The Panthers – ranked third in the coaches poll – had a low score of 53, well ahead of second-place Hatton-Northwood-Thompson with 111. Lisbon rounded out the top three with 128.

Brady Fossum, John Mueller and Noah Kraft rounded out the RHS scoring with 11th-, 18th- and 21st-place finishes, respectively.

Girls XC second

at Northwood

The RHS girls cross country team took second in Northwood, led by senior Allison Foster, who took third overall. Foster ran the 4K (2.48 miles) in 16:53.

The Panther fell one point short of first-place Surrey at 71. Grafton was a distant third at 125.

RHS – ranked fifth in the coaches poll – was bolstered by strong performances from Tristin Lunde in 13th, Jessica Blessum in 16th and Bailey Nelson in 19th.

Lunde ran 18:08, Blessum ran 18:32 and Nelson finished in 18:44. Karin Selland wasn’t far off that pack of Panthers, finishing 21st in 19:02.

RHS competed in Grafton at Fair Oaks Golf Course on Thursday. The teams are in Cooperstown for a 10:30 a.m. meet today, hosted by Griggs County Central.

Area football results

In 9-Man, Region 3 football, TGU improved to 2-0 with a 64-6 rout of Parshall-White Shield in the Titans’ home opener Aug. 30.

Six different Titans found the end zone, led by Colter Thorp and Kolter Schell’s pair of touchdowns each.

Thorp opened the scoring on a 60-yard reception from quarterback Eli Luna. The Titans added another 32 points in the second quarter and led 64-0 before P-WS ruined the shutout on a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Special teams played a role as Evan Burckhard returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Titans made 2-point conversions on all eight of their touchdowns.

TGU hosted Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood on Friday.

In Class A, Region 3 football North Prairie (Rolette-Rolla-Wolford) rallied in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns, but fell 20-19 to Des Lacs-Burlington on Aug. 30.

North Prairie took a 7-6 lead into the half following a Brody Cahill 4-yard touchdown reception from Jalen Pfeifer.

DL-B scored the only points of the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Erick Knutson to give the Lakers a 14-7 lead.

Pfeifer found Casey Julson for a 34-yard TD with 5:41 left in the game, but the extra point failed. DL-B scored with 57 seconds left to take a 20-13 lead. NP scored as time expired on a 25-yard reception for Sean Soukup. The 2-point conversion run was stopped by the Lakers.
