Towner cowboys battle in Ranch Rodeo
Heading into the trailer relay, North Country Mercantile and Envision of Towner were tied at 24 points in the Ranch Rodeo at the Pierce County Fair.
The young guns from Towner turned in an impressive relay, but the time was shy of the more experienced crew of North Country Mercantile – made up of cowboys from Towner, Glenburn and Minot.
The red-shirted team of Bill Kuntz and Curt Kramer, of Towner; Justin Payne, of Glenburn; and Vegas Varty of Minot made crisp handoffs and smoothly rounded their horses into the trailer to snag the overall title July 6.
“It’s fun to win that last event when you need to,” Kuntz said. “It’s ranchers you know, so the funnest part is competing with your friends and neighbors. And teasing each other too.”
Fellow Towner native Lane Marshall competed for Envision and said the team of young 20-somethings was pleased to finally be near the top of the competition.
“We’re coming together as a team now and getting used to everybody,” Envision teammate Hunter Schell said.
Several of the Envision cowboys’ fathers competed in the rodeo for Anderson Trucking, which took third overall, giving bragging rights to the younger generation, as least for a short while.
The rodeo drew about 300 fans to see steer mugging, range doctoring, wild cow milking, trailer loading and the relay.
