Rolette wins Legion opener

By Staff | Jun 13, 2014

Rolette Post 194 used a six-run fourth inning to jumpstart a Northeast region win over Bottineau Post 42 in both teams’ American Legion Class B openers.

The trio of Karson Schoening, T.J. Martin and Seth Vivier led Rolette with two RBIs each and Post 194 held off a late Bottineau rally for a 10-6 win at Dakota College at Bottineau’s Lumberyard.

“I was a little surprised,” Rolette coach Tory Danielson said. “I figured we’d come out a bit rustier. It was the first time we were all together and first time with live pitching since high school (season) and for a year for some guys, so I have no complaints.”

Both teams struggled on the mound, but Rolette’s offense was rolling early. Speedy leadoff batter Jalen Pfeifer scored the game’s first run after reaching on a walk. Pfeifer stole second, took third on a passed ball, and was batted home on a single by Schoening.

Pfeifer stole again in the third and fourth innings, but it wasn’t until the fourth that his teammates followed him across the plate. Both Martin and Vivier got their pair of RBIs in the fourth inning and both quickly went home.

“T.J. Martin hit the ball real well for us,” said Danielson, who also complimented Schoening’s day at the plate. “I think were gonna be just fine. We’re young, but experienced. We’re all 15 through 17 and a big handful played in state Babe Ruth, so I don’t see us having many jitters, which is nice.”

Bottineau scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth, before Rolette added three more in the top of the fifth. But all three runs were started by walks. During the stretch, Pfeifer scored his third run of the night.

Bottineau didn’t really get started until the seventh inning, and scored five runs to dent Rolette’s lead. Casey Tooke drove in two RBIs and led Bottineau at the plate, finishing 3 for 3.

“I thought the kids did a great job in the last inning,” Bottineau assistant coach Mark LaCroix said, “taking better approaches and putting the ball in play.”
