TGU’s Schmitt signs with Bottineau
BOTTINEAU – Mattie Schmitt has signed a letter of intent to play basketball and volleyball for the Dakota College at Bottineau Ladyjacks. Schmitt is the daughter of Randy and Stacey Schmitt of rural Towner.
Schmitt is a 5-foot-11 center and played her high school basketball for the TGU Titans. As a senior she averaged 20.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Schmitt shot 53 percent from the field and 62 percent from the free-throw line in 2014. She averaged 2.3 steals, 1.2 assists, and 1.8 blocked shots per game.
Schmitt holds the school’s career-scoring record with 1,673 points. She was named to the Class B Girls All-State Team, was selected as the Region 6 and District 11 Senior Athlete of the Year, was a three-time all-region selection, and a four-time all-district selection.
“We look for her to provide solid post play on both ends of the court in basketball,” DCB coach Wayne Johnson said. “She has great moves around the basket and also handles herself well, offensively, away from the basket. We look for Mattie to improve our inside-out attack and strengthen us on the boards. She plays tough.”
In volleyball as a senior Schmitt had 179 kills, 21 aces with a 91 percent serving efficiency, 154 digs and 33 blocks. She was an All-District performer twice, and an All-Region selection once. She served as team captain and was named the District 11 Senior Athlete of the year.
“In volleyball, she will provide needed help in the front row,” DCB coach Cory Fehringer said. “We need size, especially defensively. She will be used in whatever role will best benefit our team, but regardless she will be a key performer for the 2014 Ladyjacks.
“While Mattie is an excellent athlete she may even be a better person. She has solid core values, is an excellent student and will be a great teammate. She is exactly the type of student-athlete we seek to represent DCB and our Ladyjacks programs.”
