Comets, Wildcats bounced in Region 4
The first round of the Region 4 boys basketball tournament wasn’t kind to area teams Rolette-Wolford and Benson County.
The Comets (10-13) took the No. 2 seed as the District 8 runners-up, but lost to District 7 No. 3 seed Harvey-Wells County 60-53 in a quarterfinal Monday in Devils Lake.
Mark Nyhus paced the Hornets with 16 points and 12 rebounds as H-WC led for nearly the entire game. R-W was led by Casey Julson’s 17 points and Nick Myhre and Jalen Pfeifer added 16 and 10, respectively.
“I thought it was a good game,” R-W coach Jason Heinz said. “We definitely had our chances. The one thing where we lost it was on the rebounds. They go a little bit lengthy for us and it seemed like they got way too many offensive rebounds.”
H-WC ripped down 14 offensive rebounds and made clutch free throws down the stretch. Heinz said it was fun working with his senior class of forwards Trevor Gottbreht and Myhre. Gottbreht played the latter part of the season with a busted thumb and Pfeifer, a junior, missed the first half of the year with an injury.
“I thought the kids came together well,” Heinz said. “A break here and there and our season would’ve been completely different. We did some nice things and we just gotta get in the gym and the weight room in the offseason. Next year, I don’t think I’ll start a kid over 6-foot, so we’ll definitely have to get this team stronger.”
No. 5-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan, the District 7 champions, beat Benson County 63-47 in a quarterfinal Monday. The game was out of hand in the second quarter as the Indians took a 16-point lead into the half.
Senior forward Kaleb Westad led BC in his final game with 17 points. Junior Quentin Sears added 10. The Wildcats finished 11-12 overall.
FW-M junior Trayvon McKay scored 31 points in the win. The Indians beat H-WC 76-42 in a semifinal Tuesday, and North Star beat No. 9 St. John 70-60 in the other semifinal. The Bearcats and Indians played Thursday for the title.
