Comets runners-up at Sawyer Invite

By Staff | Dec 27, 2013

The Rolette-Wolford girls basketball team is feeling encouraged after narrowly missing out on a championship last week at the Sawyer Invite.

The Comets beat Surrey 63-43 in the first round and handled Des-Lacs Burlington 52-37 in a semifinal before falling 51-43 to Velva in the final.

“We ran into a Velva team that’s probably one of the best defensive teams we’re gonna see and we got a little rattled,” R-W coach Jill Murtaugh said. “We made some shots, but some mistakes hurt us.”

Senior forward Rae Beaver is leading the Comets on the offensive end and scored a team-high 20 against DL-B, which trailed by just two at the half.

“I think we’re coming off a little bit of a high at Sawyer,” Murtaugh said. “We really wanted that championship game, but having never played in the game we did well. We don’t want to peak right now, we want to keep getting better everyday.”

The Comets play at Rolla on Jan. 3.
