Christenson to run for Jamestown College

Rugby High School senior Hannah Christenson is headed to Jamestown College to join the Jimmies in track and field. Christenson signed a North Star Athletic Association Letter of Intent this week to join the NAIA program led by women’s track and field coach Jim Clark.

“My dad used to go there and they have a really good biology program and I want to go into dentistry,” Christenson said, “and they get people into dental school. … I’m just really excited to go there because the coach seems to know what he’s doing and all the people I talked to seemed to like it. It seems like a lot of fun.”

Christenson had a breakout season in the spring, where she was moved from middle distance events to sprinting. She took eighth in 400-meter dash at the state meet and helped the Panthers to a fifth-place finish the 1,600 relay and sixth in the 3200 relay.

“Hannah is an outstanding student with a 3.96 cumulative GPA throughout her high school years at Rugby,” Clark said in a press release. “Hannah is connected with the Jimmies in that her dad, Erik, competed in track and field for Jamestown for a year. And her high school coach, Bill Jansen, is also a former Jimmie star athlete in both track and field and football.”

Jansen said Christenson is a driven athlete, who is excelling despite finding her niche on the track later in her high school career.

“The last two meets, she had run real well,” Jansen said, “especially the state meet. She felt the (400) was something she could do.”

Christenson is looking to take a few more steps up in placing in that event next May.

“I’m hoping to place higher in the 400 and qualify in a few more open events and hopefully not get hurt,” Christenson said.

Her top time in the 400 is 1 minute, 1 second, which was a state-qualifying mark. Qualifying for the finals came as a surprise.

“I just got done running prelims for 400 and I didn’t think I got in the finals,” she said, “and me and my friend were sitting on the field and I saw my name pop up that I made it. It was awesome.”

Christenson also ran cross country for the Panthers and has served as a statistician for the wrestling team.
