LETTER: SNAP supports ND ag production

By Staff | Jun 2, 2017

Having grown up a North Dakota farm kid I’ve always been proud of our state’s long history of feeding the nation. This crucial role for North Dakota requires many people working in direct agriculture production, distribution, research, rural development, conservation, and bringing crops to market. The federal Farm Bill keeps all of the pieces working together to bring food from our farms to kitchen tables across America.

The largest section of the Farm Bill is Title 4, Domestic Nutrition Assistance, more commonly known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In fact, 78% of Farm Bill funding is used to ensure farmers’ products reach American families struggling with hunger. North Dakota’s 32,000 farms and ranches produce food that helps feed the 54,000 North Dakotans and 44 million Americans who benefit directly from SNAP. In short, SNAP supports our economy and keeps our families healthy and strong.

Cuts to the SNAP program pull North Dakota ag products off the dinner tables of millions of Americans. Contact our North Dakota Delegation, Senator Heidi Heitkamp, Senator John Hoeven and Representative Kevin Cramer in Washington and tell them to support North Dakota’s farms, ranches and families by fully funding SNAP.
