Letter: Vote No on Measure 1

By Staff | Apr 29, 2016

I am writing this as a woman in agriculture today. I grew up knowing I wanted to be involved in agriculture, but I thought I was limited because of my gender. I no longer see it that way. I now partner with my husband and we operate a small grain farm.

As an equal voice in agriculture today I, would like to encourage everyone to Vote NO on MEASURE 1.

For more than 80 years, family farming has been the backbone of North Dakota’s economy and has served North Dakota well. Family farmers buy local and support local communities in so many ways. Corporate farms have no loyalty to local communities and often buy supplies and goods from wherever they can get them at the lowest cost.

Corporate farming increases competition for land. It is hard for low and moderate income family farmers to compete with high profiting executives.

Since South Dakota weakened their corporate farming restrictions, they’ve lost 5,000 small and medium-sized farms. If Measure 1 passes it will allow corporate farming to take over traditional family farming in North Dakota. If we reject corporate farming and defeat Measure 1, family farming will continue to be the backbone of North Dakota’s economy and our main streets, supporting the strength of local communities and their prosperity.

This measure affects us all. We need to raise our collective voice in opposition to Measure 1 and vote no.
