Reporter’s Notebook: Eagles hold fishing derby at Sand Lake
Sand Lake may not be the large ice fishing extravaganza that other places like Devils Lake have, but it did quite well on Saturday, February 17, and which was sponsored by the Rugby Eagles. The ice was snow cleared by the dock on the south side for people to enter the thick ice on the lake. About 75 trucks and various cars, were scattered all over the lake to begin at noon. Most of the anglers had their tents, ice houses, shelters and buckets set up earlier, preparing for the cold weather.
Kids were running all over the ice. This driver was petrified as it was her first time driving on ice let alone with another 75 trucks. I waited for the big crack, knuckles grabbing the wheel. Instead I was terrified by someone who appeared to be about 5 racing by on a snowmobile nearly clipping my front fender. The ice held.
People began fishing. There was hot chocolate, and heaters to stand by during the 20-plus mph winds and near the end snow that came down fast and sideways. Welcome to North Dakota ice fishing. Somebody screamed, and anglers peeked their heads out to see “how big was the fish.” One angler was sitting on the old fashioned bucket without an ice house, surrounded by three children screaming and reaching into the hole, as it froze almost as fast as he churned it open. It appears sitting outside at the hole is not the easiest thing, as the ice keeps freezing over.
There were several prizes awarded: Jaden Schneider won a Marcum LCD 5″ underwater camera, Janice Brossart won the Eskimo 8″ Ice Auger, Lance Zietz Esdkimo 3I Ice Shelter, and Mike Wendland took home the Traveling Trophy.
