Make a Resolution to be More Involved

By Staff | Jan 1, 2016

As I volunteered via the Rugby Lions last Sunday evening at the Lyric Theatre I thought, “Do I want to have a New Years resolution this year?” Of course, there’s the typical save more money, lose some weight, blah, blah blah all good things in theory, however not easy to stick to and seriously we should be doing those things anyways!

Yes, I do want to be more positive this year. I’m naturally a bright spirited person, but everyone has their days or that person that seems to get under your skin (We all do, don’t feel bad!). As I got to greet movie goers on Sunday, I thought “It’s always fun when I’m here!” So why not consider volunteering more? The great part is it’s quite easy! It does require a bit of time as little or as much as you want. It’s not a major sacrifice, like giving up chocolate or waking up hours earlier than schedule to get on a treadmill. And usually most often if you don’t know what to do or how to do something in a volunteer field, someone is likely to give you a hand and point you in the right direction! The good old saying goes, it’s hard to find good help let alone free help!

This community really does revolve around volunteers. The extra hands often make up many of the programs in the community, if it be the sports programs wrestling, gymnastics, the fire department, the hospital, Music in the Park you know what I’m talking about heck our own movie theatre! Even some of our great events and happenings wouldn’t take place if it weren’t for volunteers The Pierce County Fair, the Prairie Village Museum and, I know so well, Geographical Center Day. They are great events, but if we didn’t have people stepping forward and lending a hand they wouldn’t be possible.

As much as the community strives on volunteers, you will as well. Not only do you know you are helping out, but it’s also fun! Some times it’s a blast! You know a good job was done when you end an event truly saying, “That was fun!” and just smile! When you volunteer, you get to meet new people, often someone you wouldn’t normally say hi to on the street. If you are new to town, I highly recommend picking something and giving it a try.

Sometimes I go to events and it’s always the same people working and then I again remember, I need to volunteer more! We need to make sure the programs that run on volunteers keep getting the help they need so we can all benefit from them. I don’t want to take any of them for granted, or worse lose them.

As you ponder if you should make a New Years resolution, think about volunteering. Be the good, you want to see right in your community. It doesn’t matter what, every bit helps and while you’re at it take your children, parents, or why not your neighbor! The more involved the more fun! Work hard and play harder!

I hope you had a wonderful New Year and I so look forward to 2016. Cheers!
