Lacing up the sneakers
When Jaycees co-president Brekka Belisle asked me to participate in Rugby’s Jaycees Jammerz team that will play against the Harlem Ambassadors, it sounded like a great idea.
Only a few years ago, I was a regular at noon ball at the Minot YMCA and despite being a solid 250 pounds, could get up and down the court with the best of them.
I’ve never been an offensive juggernaut, but I have been able rebound and do the fundamentals of basketball (with the possible exception of defending on the perimeter).
I think I’ll be in for a rude awakening.
It’s been around three years since I’ve competitively played basketball and I have to say that was more than a few pounds ago as well. I might be nearly as round as the ball in some places.
But I think it’ll a good motivator to get me in a little bit better cardiovascular shape and the event promises to be a lot of fun.
I remember going to Harlem Globetrotters games as a kid and having an absolute blast. This team might not have Meadowlark Lemon or Curly Neal, but they have a really positive message about staying in school and away from drugs, which should help make it a great family event.
For now, I’ll have to do a little running and get down to the Armory and shoot around.
Even more than making a few baskets, I’d like to be able to get up and down the floor with the Ambassadors.
I’ll definitely be one player on the Jammerz that won’t be doing any jamming.
