District gets high marks for offering programs
The Rugby School District deserves an ‘A’ for implementing three worthwhile programs for students and parents this term.
The first, a before-and-after-school homework assistance program for grade school students which has attracted a good number of students from both Ely Elementary and Little Flower School. In fact, a surprising number are getting up early to go in before school to get assistance. As one teacher put it, “that shows a lot of ambition.”
In January, the district will begin a 10-week “Gearing Up for Kindergarten” program. It’s free and open to parents and their children who will be entering Kindergarten next term.
Each 90-minute session includes 45 minutes of parent and child activities together and then 45 minutes of separate activities. The district’s Kindergarten teachers will be coordinating the program. The intent is to help make the transition to school smooth and successful for those youngsters.
And speaking of transitions, a three-part program to help college-bound students become better prepared for what’s in store for htem kicked off last month at Rugby Jr.-Sr. High.
The program entitled – “Are You Ready? The College Transition – was provided through a grant the district received and includes discussion on such topics as academics, finances, relationships and making healthy choices. It’s designed to help parents and students, who are planning to attend post secondary education, get valuable insight on what challenges they will encounter once arriving on campus. The second session will be held on March 15 and the third on April 6. It’s also free.
Federal education stimulus dollars and grants enabled the district to provide these programs, and it’s likely they will continue to be offered in the future if there is sufficient interest.
It’s encouraging to see the district provide additional education opportunities for school patrons and students.
And for that, school officials deserve a lot of credit.
