Time for some potpourri
Improvements and additions to the Pierce County Fairgrounds are crucial to the county fair being an entertainment fixture for years to come.
The Pierce County Fair Association and Rugby Park District have already discussed building an exhibit hall. There is no large, enclosed building to display and house exhibits.
Improvements and upgrades to the grandstand and restroom facilities are also sorely needed. Of course, cost is the main hurdle to overcome in improving the grounds, and major improvements won’t be made overnight. However, it would be wise for the park district, with input from the two main fairgrounds users, the fair association and racing association, to discuss work needed and work together in sharing costs.
Turnout for election high
Voter turnout at the recent Rugby school district election was surprisingly high, especially since there were no city and county primary elections this June. The need to fill two school board seats by write-in was likely behind the turnout.
As reported earlier this month, the trend of late is electing board members through write-in elections. School districts traditionally have the most difficulty in finding candidates to serve on boards, despite the fact they oversee the largest taxpayer-funded operation in the county.
Perhaps in the future board members who know they will not seek re-election can give more notice of their intention, therefore allowing more time for residents to consider filing. Not that past and future write-in candidates were incapable of serving, but it’s best if voters have time to consider candidates for this important public position.
Have patience regarding street work
Driving around Rugby may seem like an adventure these days.
One day a street is open and the next day a section is closed for street repairs.
While all this road construction taking place may be frustrating for motorists and nearby residents, just think how nice it will be in a few months when the repairs are completed and our streets are in much better condition. Have patience.
