Pastor’s Corner: Time! Do you have a minute?
Jesus began His earthly ministry saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
Driving down the street the other day, I noticed an elderly gentleman walking slowly from his house to the newspaper box along the street. My thoughts were: “Wow, he’s old! I wonder what his story is? He was a baby once, just like my new grandson that was just born this week! What did this gentleman do when he was young? Did he play sports? What was his occupation? Does he have any regrets about life? Is he at peace with God? Is he ready for Heaven?” (It’s amazing how thoughts and questions that can flood your mind in a short period of time like what was happening for me.)
Someone has said, “Youth looks ahead, the aged look back, and the middle aged just plain look tired!” Time is a gracious gift and commodity that we are given. We talk about “spending time” and that is true. We can’t take time back and relive time that has been spent, but thankfully we are allowed by God to make changes today for the time we have before us. We all have time ahead of us; for a period of time we may continue to live here on earth but never knowing exactly when the time on the clock will end for us. However and for certain, we all have time in eternity ahead of us either in heaven or in hell as the Bible clearly tells. No wonder the first message Jesus began to preach was “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand (it was present). Repent and believe the Gospel.”
God cares about our time on earth as well as where we will spend time in eternity, and that is why Jesus came. Jesus made a way for us to know Him now as our Savior and Lord, and He graciously made a way so we can spend eternity in Heaven.
The question for us is will we respond to His call? Will we take time to seek Him, repent of our sin, and believe the Gospel? The words of Romans 13:11 remind us of how important today is in our search for God. “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.” Yes, Jesus Christ can bring something new, true, exciting, and enduring into every hour, every day, and every year of our lives, and then on into eternity! Praise His Holy Name!
