North Dakota Home Garden Variety Trials
Like to try new garden varieties? North Dakota State University is looking for gardeners to help evaluate vegetable and flower varieties that grow best in North Dakota Gardens
Everyone is welcome to participate! This includes commercial growers and backyard gardeners; beginners and experts.
Every year, a team of over 200 families in North Dakota evaluate promising vegetable, herb and flower varieties in their backyard gardens. We share the results with one another and develop a list of recommended varieties for gardeners.
Almost everything about the North Dakota Home Garden Variety Trial program in 2019 stays the same in 2020, but here are a few new features:
Organic seeds. We have learned many of our gardeners follow organic practices. A few gardeners asked for organic seeds to be offered. You will notice several of our trials offer organic seeds this year.
Shipping fees. It was necessary to raise shipping fees from $4.00 to $5.00 this year due to increased fees charged by the US Postal Service. Fees to Canadians were raised to $12.50. Fees for seeds stayed the same at $1 per trial.
The North Dakota Home Garden Variety Trial does not require complicated data. Each trial is a side-by-side comparison of two promising varieties. For each trial, we wish to know which of the two varieties germinated best, was most healthy, matured earlier, produced the highest yield, and produced the finest quality food/flower. We wish to know which of the two varieties you prefer and which of the two varieties you recommend to other gardeners. Page 15 of the 2020 Home Garden Variety Trial Catalog has an example of a completed evaluation form.
Gardeners can participate in up to seven trials. Seeds may be ordered online or using the order form.
