Mavec: What Thanksgiving means to me
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of all. I love that it isn’t about what I can receive, but rather about what I can give. I have always been a firm believer in helping others, and that is what is most important about the Thanksgiving season.
In my family, attending noonday service at my church is a Thanksgiving tradition. I love walking into the sanctuary, seeing everyone dressed in fall colors and praising and giving thanks to God for all He has done. The message is always a reminder of why we should be thankful.
After church, I have the wonderful fortune of going home to my mother’s holiday cooking. Now, I know that everyone says his or her mom is the best chef in the world, but my mother actually is. With turkey, HoneyBaked Ham, macaroni and cheese, greens, dressing, sweet potato bake, deviled eggs, cheesy potatoes, fresh rolls, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, pound cake and more, I never leave the table without needing a serious napping session.
For me, Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family, being grateful for them and for those moments that are shared around the dinner table.
Usually, my family will head out to see a movie, depending on which holiday themed cinematic feature comes out that day. Sometimes, however, my sister and I curl up next to my mom in her bed, and we watch television and laugh together until we want more dessert. Other times, we’ll head over to my dad’s sister’s house and spend time with his side of the family.
Whatever we decide to do, we always have a good time just being together.
This year, I am especially looking forward to being home for Thanksgiving. Although I will not be in Cleveland technically until the day after Thanksgiving, my family has agreed on waiting to celebrate until I get home on Friday. I cannot wait to spend time with my family and friends in the place I grew up, eat my mom’s food, and watch the new season of “Gilmore Girls” with my mom and sister.
Another family tradition of ours is to go around and say what we are thankful for each year. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my job, for my kitten, and most of all, for my family.
