Guest column: Through a child’s eyes
I was at the Democratic State Delegate Selection Meeting on Saturday. I took notes on the event and interviewed several people on whom they supported and why. After a lot of election process stuff that sounded like an adult in Charlie Brown, the meeting finally got down to the elections.
The delegates who did not apply to be national delegates voted for the ones who did. Twenty-three of 394 will go to Philadelphia. Those who applied gave short speeches in front of all of the other delegates for their candidate. The 23 going to the national convention are the most diverse group of delegates in North Dakota history.
Congressional candidate Chase Iron Eyes gave a powerful speech against what he called “the hatred that Trump spreads,” and against Kevin Kramer for supporting Trump. I spoke with Iron Eyes before the meeting, and he said that he been to Rugby and loved it. He moved to Fort Yates, which he said is much like Rugby, so his kids could grow up like me-able to just get on my bike and go places.
Then the 394 delegates voted two more times for party leaders and elected officials, and for at-large national delegates.
They finished off the day with a speech from gubernatorial candidate Marvin Nelson about how it is important to elect Democrats. He said that they will make it easier for injured workers to get the health benefits they need, and how we need more daycares so families can work more and have more income for their families. Nelson told me that he graduated from Rugby High School in 1976!
Many people support Hillary and Bernie for many reasons. Here are some reasons that North Dakota delegates support them.
For Bernie Sanders: relatable, supports gay rights, everyone should have rights to food, healthcare, college, etc.
For Hillary Clinton: experience, ideas, consistency, qualification, against the hatred Donald Trump spreads out into the world. Greg Lugar supports “Hillary because she has the best chance to beat Donald Trump, and he must be stopped.”
