Sporadically Sara: Don’t Let Bad People Stop You From Giving
Scrolling through my Facebook this morning there was an article that stopped me in my tracks. There is a Georgia woman who is being criminally charged for claiming to have cancer in order to get donations! Part of me thought there is no way that someone would really do this, so I clicked on the story to read more. Sure enough, there it was in black and white. Of course I wouldn’t be sharing this story if I had just read a post on Facebook, this was from a credible news source.
The story is that this woman started falsely claiming that she had cancer a few years ago and has been given about $25,000 in gifts and cash to help with her “medical expenses”. She went so far as to shaving her head to appear as if she was enduring chemotherapy. When she was asked by police to provide some kind of evidence that she actually has cancer, she gave them some falsified documents from a doctor in Texas. The doctor confirmed that he has never had her as a patient and did not sign the documents she provided.
There are so many things morally wrong with this story, I don’t know where to start. The root of this woman’s plan was to obviously gain financial wealth, while taking advantage of human kindness and shredding any trust people might have in others. It makes me so sad to think that we can’t trust someone when they tell us that they have a terminal illness. I feel so bad for the people that have made donations to this woman thinking that they were doing some good with their money. Sometimes the people that make donations are giving the last dollar in their pocket and really can’t afford to give their money to someone else, but they want to help in any way they can.
The fact that this woman has taken advantage of people’s kindness is what makes me upset. In my lifetime, things in our world have changed so much it is amazing, but human kindness still exists and this is proof of that. People gave to this woman hoping that their money could help her in any way and she took that kindness and stomped all over it.
I think about all of the people that actually have cancer and struggle with it every day or people that have lost loved ones to cancer. No amount of money will ever bring those people back or stop the pain that people have to endure to get through cancer treatments, but having the option to get medical attention and all that it has to offer is priceless.
I know this isn’t the first person to do something like this, and it certainly isn’t the worst crime someone has ever committed, but I think it caught my eye for a reason. Maybe it is to make me stop and think. It made me think about the great lengths that people will go to just for money; it also amazes me that people can put common morals aside just to make money. This was a reminder that even though one person took advantage of a situation just to make money, it shouldn’t stop me from making donations to others in the future. I don’t want this to change the way I look at all people in need. It is always better to give than to receive.
