As many are aware, Pierce County 4-H has been working to bring a 4-H Shooting Sports Program to Pierce County. The group was able to purchase its first set of air rifles this past spring and is currently in the process of purchasing a set of archery equipment to be used by youth at practices.

The group also hopes to continue raising funds to purchase an enclosed trailer to facilitate storage and transportation of equipment.

Last month a number of new volunteers were certified in both the archery and air rifle disciplines. Earlier this month, volunteer shooting sports instructors also met in the Pierce County courthouse to discuss plans to launch the Pierce County 4-H Shooting Sports Program in early 2015. Plans are progressing to begin holding Shooting Sports practices beginning January 5th and running through the end of February. As of now enrollment will be limited to current 4-H members and youth of volunteer instructors.

The registration deadline for youth who want to participate in Pierce County 4-H shooting sports this year is Friday, December 19th, and practices will begin Monday, January 5th at 6:30 pm at the Rugby Armory. A $10 processing fee will be charged for each discipline to cover equipment repairs and ammunition. As of now, enrollment will be limited to current 4-H members and youth and volunteer instructors. At this time, we also ask that youth use the equipment provided by the program at practices.

All 4-H families can expect another email and postal mail message by the end of the month or early December with complete registration details.

Our next Shooting Sports Committee and Volunteer meeting will be Monday, December 8th at 5:30 pm in the courthouse meeting room (basement level, next to the Extension office). All 4-H volunteers and leaders are welcome to attend, whether you were at last week’s meeting or not.

We wish to thank everyone who is helping Pierce County 4-H continue to grow and thrive in so many ways!
