Chapman: Time to get informed

By Staff | May 30, 2014

Hopefully by you turning to this page that means a few minutes were spent reading the thoughts of the candidates.

We’re a mere 11 days away from June’s primary elections, which whittle races in the county down to two for November, and ultimately decide the winners in the City of Rugby.

Eleven days is also a lot of time, so a second read of the candidates’ thoughts is a great idea.

The Tribune is grateful to many of the candidates for their time and thoughtful responses to the three questions asked. Now, it’s the voters’ turns to be diligent and vet the candidates in their wards, districts, city or county. Now you know a little bit about what they stand for, so contact the candidates if you still have questions. Just because a friend or acquaintance is on the ballot, doesn’t mean he or she is the right person for the elected office.

Nearly every candidate lives in Rugby or nearby in Pierce County and are familiar faces through their work and volunteerism throughout the community. They’re seeking your votes and you should be seeking answers and the truth about why they’re running and what they plan to accomplish.

Contact info isn’t hard to come by nowadays, so grab the new edition of the area phone book or use the internet.

Also, keep a copy of the candidates’ answers in this edition and make sure the elected officials are held accountable. It’s easy to put up a front during campaign season, but even easier to not follow through. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen and ensure the winners haven’t just blown smoke.

We often talk about how grateful we are to live in a free country where we can vote and aren’t subject to tyrants. We also, especially this time of year, express great gratitude to our veterans and fallen soldiers for protecting our freedoms, including the right to vote.

Voting is not just a right our armed services protect, but a huge responsibility to them, ourselves and each other.

We can’t just go through the motions when voting on local, state or national levels. We must be diligent. Let’s do it right these next 11 days and become informed voters.
