Minot
Joseph P. Haman, 96 of Minot and formerly of Towner passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at Northern Lights Rehab and Long-Term Care in Minot, North Dakota.
Joseph P., the son of Peter and Magdalena (Jaeger) Haman, was born on March 29, 1929 on the family farm near Towner, North Dakota. The nineth of thirteen children. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school just down the road. On November 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Helen Fettig at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. They established their home southeast of Towner on the previous Pete Jorgenson farm, purchasing it from Mabel and Emma Jorgenson, in the fall of 1957. Here they farmed and ranched side by side, built a new home in 1961, raised and nurtured their 8 children. Per, say semi-retiring, the fall of 1988, Joe P. and Helen moved into Towner. Several years after their move into town, they chose to winter in Arizona for a number of years. Traveling to Russia, to see the Haman, Jaeger, Fettig and Wentz homelands was a special highlight for them.
Joe P. continued with the farming and ranching on a daily basis. Most would say he wasn’t semi-retired; as he still spent all his day and time at the farm working. His retirement actually did happen in 2009. In later years, you would find him still going for parts, getting anhydrous tanks in the spring, running the combine and doing falls work in the fields. Joe P. was a faithful Catholic, a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, belonged to the Catholic Foresters and was on the Berwick Township Board for a number of years. He lived a long, blessed life, who loved the land, his faith and most of all his family, whom he was proud of.
Joe P. is survived by his children, David (Dorothy) Haman of Towner, Juliana (Mathiew) Kurtz of Odessa, MO, Rita Briscoe of Sioux Falls, SD, Donna (Daniel M) Brossart of Rugby, Diane Haman of Fargo, Sandra (Maurus) Brossart of Rugby, Rebecca Haman (Fred Schell) of Towner and Joseph J (Amelia) Haman of Rugby; Lily Squibb, his very special little one; 22 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren with one on the way; 1 step great-great grandchild; his siblings, William Haman and Bea Tolle; many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Helen (2024); son-in-law, John Briscoe; grandson, Zachary Haman; granddaughter, Katherine Humble; great-grandson, Joshua Briscoe; brothers, Adam, Fred, Clemence and Richard Haman; sisters, Sister Juliana Haman, Barbara Ebach, Elizabeth Caron, Eva Kuhn, Katherine Lundin and Clara Schatz and his parents.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Lunch and fellowship will be in the church basement. Father Michael Schommer, Celebrant.
