Shirley Tangen, age 80, of Moorhead, Minn., passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at her home in Moorhead.

Shirley Jean Tangen was born July 22, 1944, to John and Selma (Muri) Broe. Shirley was raised in Broe Township on the Muri farm that John and Selma farmed. She graduated high school in 1962 from Leeds, N.D.

Shirley moved to Fargo after high school and worked as a bookkeeper, holding administrative jobs until she retired. As a young woman, she would take the Greyhound bus on weekends to Leeds to go back “home” to visit friends and family.

On Aug. 20, 1977, Shirley married Oberlin (Obe) Tangen in Fargo, N.D. They made their home in Moorhead, Minn.

After Obe’s passing on July 2, 1987, Shirley continued to live in Moorhead until she met special friend Don Peltier. Shirley moved to the Ulen area to live with Don, where Don had a huge garden with fresh vegetables all summer long.

After Don’s passing in April 2016, Shirley lived in a few assisted living residences, finally settling into Home Appeal where she passed away.

Shirley enjoyed dancing and loved laughing and visiting with her friends and family. She especially loved her little dog, Brandon!

Shirley is survived by her sister, Bonnie Gruhl, Fargo, N.D, and nephews, nieces and friends.

Shiley was preceded in death by parents; husband Obe; partner, Don; brother, Halynd; brother, Palmer; sister, Ardis Randle; brother, Gerald; and in-laws: Arlene Broe, Ivene Broe, Elvin Randle, Delores Broe and Jack Gruhl.

Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff at Home Appeal and the hospice caregivers for being her comfort.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Twin Valley, Minn.
