Howard Duane Duchscher was born on September 1, 1931 to Jacob and Amelia (Schiff) Duchscher in Rugby, North Dakota. He died at the age of 93 years on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 under the care of his family and hospice at his home in Rugby.
Howard was raised on several farms in the Rugby area and attended rural schools and Rugby High School. He then worked for several farmers in the Pleasant Lake area until he was inducted in the U.S. Marine Corps on December 21, 1951. While in the Marine’s, he served as active duty until December 4, 1953, and in the reserve until he was honorably discharged on December 20, 1959. In 1951, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Volk. They were united in marriage on June 8, 1954, in Rugby and to this union seven children were born. Howard began working for Farmers Union Oil Company in Rugby in 1954, where he worked in various positions for 41 years. After this, he worked for Pierce County Soil Conservation for nine years.
Howard’s hobbies were bowling, golfing, fishing and woodworking. He was a lifetime member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was a good father, brother, neighbor and friend, who will be dearly missed.
Howard is survived by his sons, Bill Duchscher (Jan Matske) of WI, Dan Duchscher of OR, Tim Duchscher of Minot and Keith Duchscher of OR; daughters, Diane Brandt, Kathy (Wes) Broe and Mary Vold, all of Rugby; sisters, Bernice Kirchofner, Carolyn Bickler, Helen Kremer, all of Rugby and Evalyn (Tim) Blessum of Minot; sister-in-law, Mary Duchscher of Rugby; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years; sons-in-law, Steve Brandt and Dean Vold; a sister, Julianne Halvorson; a brother, Jim Duchscher; brothers-in-law, John Kirchofner, Wendel Bickler, Gerald Halvorson and Phil Kremer and his parents.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 19 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby and burial with full military honors will follow at the Little Flower Catholic Cemetery in Rugby.
