Carl Richard “Rick” Benson JR., 70, of Wolford, ND passed away from cancer on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the Towner County Living Center in Cando ND.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday October 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, ND. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Internment next to his parents will take place at the Mylo Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to the Mylo Lutheran Cemetery, 8203 49th Ave, Mylo, ND 58353, and Fathers Farm, 4440 78th St NE, Wolford, ND, 58385.
Rick was born the son of Dick and Babe (Jolliffe) Benson March 20, 1954, in Rolla ND. He attended school in Wolford, ND graduating high school in 1972. He then attended Minot State University on a basketball scholarship.
He moved to Peoria, IL and worked for the Coca-Cola and Morton Building companies. He later moved to Florida and then back to ND and worked for various construction companies and farming operations. Rick loved trucking and with his buddy, Jim Dimmler, ran double hauling fertilizer and cattle out of Canada to various places in the US.
Rick was united in marriage to LaVonna Berger of Jamestown ND on March 19, 2004, in Devils Lake, ND, where they made their home and later moved to Jamestown, ND. LaVonna passed away in 2010.
Rick loved to fish and spent much of his free time throughout the years with Jim on the shores of Lake of the Woods and Devils Lake and later with his brothers Randy and Dean at local fishing spots. He also enjoyed the annual deer hunt in the Wolford area with his family.
In 2020, Rick retired and returned to the family farm at Wolford where he resided until moving to the Towner County Living Center in April 2024. The staff and residents at TCLC were like family to Rick.
Rick was preceded in death by his wife LaVonna, his parents, Dick and Babe Benson, his sister Carla Lee, his brother Dean Benson and his sister-in-law Kathryn “Klang” Benson, and his nephew Jay Essen.
Rick is survived by his brother Randy Benson and wife Kathryn of Bisbee ND, his brother-in-law Don Lee of Minot, nieces Rebecca (Tracy) Lee and Emily Lee of Minneapolis, MN; Sara (Kyle) McClammer and their sons Max and George of Indianapolis, IN; and nephew Jarrin Benson and his daughter Lennon of Portland OR.
