Betty Mae Zacher, 80, Balta, died at the St. Aloisius Care Center in Harvey early in the morning of December 16, 2023. Betty was born in Rugby on April 20, 1943 to John and Rose (Selzler) Salwey and grew up on a farm north of Orrin. She attended school at Orrin.
She married James Peter Zacher in Orrin on September 7, 1963 and they lived in Minot for a short time before moving to a farm near Balta in 1965.
Betty was a cook at the Balta School for a few years before working for many years at the Good Samaritan Hospital as a housekeeper and nurses aide. Later she was the manager of the Balta Housing and assisting in the family operation of the J & B Wheel Inn Lounge for nine years.
Betty enjoyed going camping with her family and especially liked to read . Her delight was taking care of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Zacher is survived by her husband, James, and their children, James, Jr. and his wife Sherry – Beulah; Pamela and her husband Dean Price – Mandan; Randy and his wife Teresa – Billings, Montana; and Leonard – Helena, Montana. She also leaves a sister, Frances Fettig – Surrey, North Dakota and 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, John, Jack, Edward, Joe, Sylvester, Bennie, Mike Salwey, Caroline Fritel, Delores Schaan, Rose Voeller, and Katherine Boeckler.
Funeral Services will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Balta on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 10 a.m.Burial will take place in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan later that day. Visitation will be at the Niewoehner Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.. Www.niewoehnerfh.com
