Joey Mattern

Sep 23, 2023

Dec. 30, 1976-Sept. 10, 2023

Rugby

Joey Allen Mattern was born on December 30, 1976, in Rugby, North Dakota to Wayne and Julie (Deibert) Mattern. He died at the age of 46 years on September 10, 2023, from injuries sustaining in a NO FAULT car accident.

Joey “Uncle Turd” grew up and was educated at Rugby High School until the 10th grade. His education was complete with him obtaining a GED. From the age of eight, until the time of his death, Joey worked at the family farm alongside his Grandpa Kenny and his Dad Wayne, up until he was also taken from us too soon in 2013. When he was not working, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, ‘fissking’ cars and especially building derby cars with his nephew, Andrew. He would spend countless special moments with friends and family just laughing and always having a good time. He made sure that the people he cared about the most were always cared for in times of crisis no matter how things in his own life were going.

Joey was an extremely kind person, and he would take the shirt off his back for anyone in need and found great joy in helping others whether they were friends or not. Family was so important to Joey. His nieces and nephews were an important focus for him as well as his good friend’s children. He enjoyed teaching them everything they would need to know in life to learn and grow.

Joey took great pride assisting his grandpa on the family farm. Some of his days were spent being full of dirt and grease just watching a combine or tractor in the field driven by Grandpa Kenny.

The memories of Joey are beautiful, numerous, and much needed to get all of us through the ‘all da days and erby day’ ahead of us. His family, friends and community are deeply saddened by his absence, they know that Joey is in God’s hands and is finally free from all the Earthly battles. May he rest in peace.

Joey is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Mattern of Rugby; mother, Julie Mattern of Rugby; sisters, Jackie Mattern of Minot, Joni Mattern (his ride or die person) of Rugby and Jolette Korb of Devils Lake; nephew, Andrew Lemar of Rugby; a very important bonus brother, Kyler Lemar “Peecob”; as well as several other nieces, nephews; great-nieces, nephews whom he loved so very much; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Mattern; paternal grandmother; maternal grandparents and great grandparents.
