Richard Bruno Volk, 86, of Rugby died at 3:30 p.m. August 27, 2023, at Missouri Slope Nursing Home in Bismarck, North Dakota with his family by his side. He was born April 26, 1937, in Rugby, North Dakota to Christian and Christine Volk.
Richard was raised in Rugby, enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1960 and was honorably discharged in May 1962. Richard married Marlene Yoder in 1963 in that union, two children were born Wanda and Troy. Marlene at the age of 32 passed away in 1975. He then married Lois in 1993 and she had 4 sons Jeff, Jerry, Rick, and Rob.
Richard moved back to Rugby in 1975 and continued working as a bread salesman for Sweetheart Bread. He retired at the age of 60 after 34 years in 1997. Richard was a devoted catholic and during retirement he took a more active role at Little Flower Catholic Church by becoming a Eucharistic Minister and prayed the rosary daily for his family. He also helped to maintain the cemetery grounds and enjoyed volunteering at the hospital weekly. He loved taking walks, yard work, and of course playing FreeCell completing 100,072 games. WOW! He was well known for helping anyone who asked to rid gophers and moles from their property by trapping them and was really good at it.
Richard is survived in life by his wife, Lois; daughter, Wanda (Joe) Hoffert; son, Troy (Cathy); stepsons, Jeff (Lisa), Jerry (Charity), Rick, and Rob (Beverly) Volk; grandchildren, Sean, Christopher, and Marlee Hoffert, Lauren, Julie, Trey and Isaac Volk, Sydney Robertson, Abby Keena, Ben, Moriah, Kamilah, Jeremiah, Ricky, Gabrielle, Aiden Volk; 6 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way; sister, Delores Isakson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Schwab, Mary Lou (Richard) Wangler, Tina and Addie Berg, Donna (Lavern) Mast, Evangeline (Tom) Collier, Larry and Kathy, and Opal Yoder; along with several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceeded in death by his wife, Marlene; his parents, Christian and Christine; father and mother in laws Bud and Pearl Yoder and Thomas and Myrtle Berg; his first born, Baby Boy Volk; his 3 sisters, Betty (Will) Meyer, Dorothy (Earl) Solem and Fran Schwab; in-laws, John Isakson, Will Meyer, Earl Solem, Donald, Rodney and Jeanne, and Roger Berg along with many other members that he thought of and prayed for daily.
Above all Richard loved his family and he will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1st at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery. Father Tom Graner, Celebrant.
