Alton Gerald Sanderson, the son of William “Art” and Gena (Olson) Sanderson was born on January 26, 1939 in Bottineau, North Dakota. He died at the age of 84 years on Monday, March 20, 2023 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota.
Alton was raised in rural Willow City on the family farm. His mother died when he was 8 years old, then his aunt, Lenora helped raise him. He graduated from Willow City in 1957 and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 5, 1957, was stationed in Germany and was honorably discharged on December 9, 1959. Alton returned to Willow City and worked for Farmers Union. On September 18, 1961, he was united in marriage to Diana Tuchscherer at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. The couple made their home in Willow City. After working for Farmers Union for 30 years, he took over the family farm and farmed until he was 80 years old, then his daughter took over the farm. Alton was a member of the Willow City Rural Fire District for 53 years, the Willow City American Legion for over 50 years, was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. Alton and Diana were married for 61 years and he was very proud of their family.
Alton is survived by his wife, Diana of Willow City; daughter, Luanne (Mike) Anderson of Bath, South Dakota; grandchildren, Cassidy (Tyler) Bierman of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Damian (Krystal) Anderson of Minot, North Dakota and Haley (Cody) Roth of Freeman, South Dakota; great grandchildren, Hayden Anderson and Stetson Roth; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Sanderson; sisters, Janet Erdman and Jean Rispa and his parents.
The Graveside Services will be held in the spring at the Notre Dame Cemetery in Willow City.
