Gabriel Scheet
July 17, 1927 – November 17, 2022
Gabriel Edward “Gabe” Scheet, the son of Xavier and Christine (Hager) Scheet was born on July 17, 1927 in Nekoma, North Dakota. He died peacefully at the age of 95 years on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at his home in Rugby, North Dakota in the care of his family and hospice.
Gabe was raised in Balta and graduated from Balta High School in 1944. He was inducted into the United States Army, served during World War II and was honorably discharged. Gabe married Irene Burgard on August 2, 1948 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. The couple made their home in Rugby and Gabe started his lifetime career in the floor installation business.
Gabe was a member of the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Grand Knight; the Rugby Jaycee’s, a life member of the Rugby Eagle’s; a life member of the Clarence E. Larson American Legion, was the last WWII vet in Rugby; a life member of the Rugby Volunteer Fire Department where he serviced as Chief from 1969-1972; was President of the North Dakota Fireman’s Association from 1973-1974 and was inducted in the North Dakota Fireman’s Hall of Fame in 2017.
Gabe is survived by his sons, Donald “BO” (Tanya Glaser of Anamoose) of Rugby and Ronald (Mary Ann) of Katy, Texas; grandchildren, Dallas, Zach, Sierra, Adria, Aaron, Nicole and Christina; 15 great grandchildren; siblings, Magdalena “Maggie” Sitter of Rugby, Albert of San Diego, California, JoanMarie Scheet of Rugby and Francis (Arlyss) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; sisters-in-law, Marie Scheet of Minot and Lois Burgard of Bozeman, Montana; daughter-in-law, Linda Scheet; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; brothers, Daniel, Raymond and Dennis; sisters, Rosemary, Susan and Linda Mae and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials made in Gabe’s honor & memory to be directed to the Rugby Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby and burial with full military honors was held at the church cemetery. Father Franklin Miller, Celebrant.
