Betty Arleen Gilbertson was born June 26, 1926 on the family farm to Amos and Benora (Broten) Gilbertson in rural Maddock. Betty was baptized, confirmed and married at Viking Lutheran Church. She was raised on the home farm and attended the Quarve School for 8 years and graduated in 1944 from the BCATS in Maddock. Betty attended summer sessions at Minot State College and taught school at Hamberg and Harlow.
Betty married Fred Jacobson at Viking Church on October 9, 1949 by Pastor Carl Turmo. They made their home on her grandparents, Broten, farm in Viking Township. They celebrated many anniversaries together. Betty was a lifetime member of Viking Church, held several offices in the Ladies Aid as it was called then, taught Sunday School and Bible School, member of the South Viking Homemakers, Heimdal 55 Club, and Sons of Norway. In her later year she attended the North Viking Circle Bible Study.
Betty and Fred hosted several 4-Hers and chaperones from 4-H exchange trips from many different states. They also hosted the orchestra members from Norway. Betty was a member of the Viking Sheep 4-H Club during her younger years.
Betty enjoyed company, the house was always open for anyone to stop and have coffee and visit. She enjoyed working with residents at Long Term Care in Rugby and helping with their lutefisk suppers and making rommergrot for the residents.
Betty’s past times were embroidering, working seco words, reading, gardening, flowers, baking and cooking, dancing and playing cards with her family.
Betty’s pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed dressing up in old clothes and having parties with Lorissa and JoLynn in their playhouse and she would climb up the ladder into the tree house with Jared to play with trucks and tractors. She was an avid rummy player with Tate, Chase, Lane and Colton. Betty like watching Reed play in the cupboards and having tea parties with Jorja, Naomi, Lacie and Ava. She loved watching Jake play with his cows and tractors. She was fortunate to have all of her family living in the Maddock area.
