Burton Underdal
Aug. 21, 1932 – Sept. 8, 2022
Burton G. Underdal was
born in Rugby, North Dakota
on August 21, 1932. His
parents were Olav and Alma
Underdal. He graduated from
Rugby High School in 1950
and from the University of
North Dakota in 1954, with a
major in Business Administra-
tion.
Electing to serve his country
after college, Burt enlisted in
the U.S. Air Force, where he at-
tained the rank of Captain. He
married his high school sweet-
heart, Muriel Anderson, in
1957. Burt and Muriel were
blessed with two children,
Stephen Mark (Sarah) and Beth
Annell Bird (Douglas), four
grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
He achieved a successful
career in the insurance indus-
try. Burt founded Center Mutu-
al Insurance Company, after ar-
ranging a merger with another
insurer and served as President
and CEO. Center Mutual is a
leading independent agent in-
surance carrier that operates in
North and South Dakota. He
was the principal owner of
Rugby Insurance Agency.
In his spare time, he enjoyed
golf, tennis, fishing and hunt-
ing, as well as spending time
with family and friends at their
home at lake Metigoshe. Upon
his retirement from the in-
surance business, Burt experi-
enced many years of happiness
and good health with Muriel at
their retirement home in Arizo-
na.
Burt had a wry sense of
humor and was known to enjoy
entertaining others. He was a
lifetime and (sometimes
long-suffering) fan of the Bos-
ton Red Sox and attended the
World Series to cheer on his
team.
Burt truly had a long and
blessed life, attaining to the age
of 90 years. He passed away on
September 8, 2022 after a brief
illness. Services have been
held.
