Edwin Hoffart

Apr 18, 2022

Jan. 2, 1931-April 5, 2022

Edwin Anton Hoffart,

the son of Joseph and

Mary (Leier) Hoffart was

born on January 2, 1931

on the family farm south

of Knox, North Dakota. He

died at the age of 91 on

Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at

Altru Hospital in Grand

Forks, North Dakota sur-

rounded by his loving

children and grandchil-

dren.

Edwin grew up on the

family farm in Benson

County and lived there all

of his life. He received his

education at the country

schoolhouse near the

farm. In 1952, he was

drafted into the United

States Marine Corps and

served as the captain of

his platoon. He was

honorably discharged in

1954 and returned home

to the farm and his sweet-

heart, Alvina Heilman.

Edwin was united in mar-

riage to Alvina Heilman

on October 5, 1954 at Our

Lady of Mount Carmel

Catholic Church in Balta.

The couple made their

home, farmed and raised

their family of eleven chil-

dren on the farm near

Knox. He loved and en-

joyed farming and looked

forward to planting sea-

son each spring. Edwin

took great pride in work-

ing the land, planting,

harvesting and raising

beef cattle. Throughout

his life and well into his

later years, he worked

hard to provide for his

family. In his lifetime, he

raised a total of 61 crops.

He drove the school bus

for the Knox public

school for five years. The

lives of Edwin and his

children were deeply sad-

dened in 1981, when he

lost the love of his life and

the mother of his chil-

dren.

Edwin was known for

his quick wit and one line

comebacks, which he had

until the very end. He was

often heard saying in

conversation, ‘hey, that’s a

fact’ or ‘hey, you can say

that again’. The memories

will remain in our hearts

forever. He loved his fam-

ily without measure and

that love was returned. He

was a member of the St.

Mary’s Catholic Church in

Knox, The Rugby Eagles,

Knights of Columbus,

Knox American Legion

and served on the town-

ship board. He will be

greatly missed by his lov-

ing family and relatives. A

great void has been left in

our hearts forever,

although many wonderful

memories remain.

Edwin is survived by

his five daughters,

Suzanne Legacie, Tammy

(Steve) Price, Renae

(Kevin) Larson, Michelle

(Raymond) Tollerud, and

Chantel (Travis) Hamil-

ton; five sons, Darrell,

Gary, Allan (Debbie),

Steven (Dianne) and Kelly

(Sheila); 15 grandchil-

dren; 21 great grandchil-

dren; three sisters, Ann

Hoffart, Beatrice Schaan

and Bertha (Ray) Klein;

four brothers, Nick,

Daniel, Albin and Michael

(Patti); several nieces,

nephews; other relatives

and friends. He was pre-

ceded in death by his

wife, Alvina; son, David

and his parents.

Mass of Christian burial

was held at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, April 12 at the

St. Mary’s Catholic

Church in Knox with

burial in the church

cemetery. Father John

Aerts, Celebrant.
