Karen Kinney

Karen Kay Kinney, the
daughter of Darwin and
Vivian (Grove) Kinney
was born on February 25,
1965, in Rugby, North
Dakota. She peacefully
passed with her daughters
by her side on Wednes-
day, February 16, 2022.
Karen was raised in the
home of her parents on
their farm in rural Rolette.
Growing up, her preferred
mode of transportation
was on horseback, be-
cause she loved to just get
up and go. Her love for
riding, brought her to
many rodeos, where she
then started barrel racing.
She graduated from
Rolette High School a year
early in 1982 and contin-
ued her education at the
University of North Dako-
ta. She then married Mike
Volk and together they
had their two daughters,
Ashley and Brittany. They
enjoyed their country
home near Round Lake.
She worked for several
years at Towner Farm Ser-
vice Office, where she en-
joyed serving her com-
munity and neighbors.
Her dedication to her po-
sition was well respected.
Karen then pursued a
career at the Bottineau
Veterinary Clinic, where
her passion to help people
and animals balanced
each other perfectly. She
shared her love for an-
imals and country living
with her daughters and
granddaughter, which will
be continued and passed
down for generations to
come. She will be missed
for her compassion, deter-
mination and strong but
loving personality. She
will be remembered for
her wisdom, honest ad-
vice, and perseverance.
Karen is survived by
her daughters, who she
was so proud of, Ashley
Volk and Brittany Ster-
ling, both of Bismarck;
granddaughter, Maci Ster-
ling; her sister, Lory (Ran-
dy) Sivertson of Rolette;
an aunt Joline Pfau of
Rugby; cousins; other re-
latives and friends. She
was preceded in death by
her parents and three
aunts.
There will be a memori-
al service for Karen in the
spring at the Anderson
Funeral Home in Rugby
followed by burial in the
Persilla Watts Cemetery in
Rugby.
