Leora Johnson

Leora Rosella Johnson,
the daughter of Lewis and
Randine (Bale) Grove was
born on October 24, 1923
in Rugby, North Dakota.
She died at the age of 98
years on Wednesday, De-
cember 29, 2021 at the
Souris Valley Care Center
in Velva, North Dakota.
Leora was raised in the
home of her parents with
her sisters in Berwick,
North Dakota. She gra-
duated from Berwick High
School in 1941 and con-
tinued her education at
the Minot Teachers Col-
lege. After receiving her
teaching certificate, she
taught in a rural school.
On September 8, 1946 she
was united in marriage to
Lester Johnson in
Berwick. They made their
home in Rugby, raised
their 2 sons, Lester Jr. and
Larry and operated the
following grocery stores,
The Sanitary Food Mark-
et, Super Fair and later
The Red Owl. Leora
helped Lester run the fam-
ily business and they re-
tired from the grocery
business in 1974. She also
worked at Johnson’s
Clothing and Myhre’s
Clothing stores for a time
before working in records
at the Johnson Clinic lab
in Rugby. She retired
from Johnson Clinic after
working there for many
years. She continued to
live at home, until her
eyesight started to decline
and she could no longer
drive. She moved to the
Haaland Manor before
moving to LaDonna’s,
Haaland Estates and final-
ly to the Souris Valley
Care Center in Velva.
Leora enjoyed baking,
playing cards and bowl-
ing, where she once took
2nd at the state tourna-
ment. She loved watching
birds and enjoyed the bea-
gle dogs in her life. She
was a member of the First
Lutheran Church in Rug-
by and was active in the
church. Leora lived a
healthy, long life and was
a wonderful mother, who
will be missed dearly.
Leora is survived by
her son, Larry Johnson of
Minot; daughter-in-law,
Edane Johnson of Cassel-
berry, Florida; grandchil-
dren, Steven Johnson of
Salt Lake City, Utah and
Erik (Karen) of Oviedo,
Florida; great grandchil-
dren, Nikolas and Zakary
Johnson and Tyler and
Christian Johnson; sister,
Joline Pfau of Rugby;
nieces, nephews; other re-
latives and friends. She
was preceded in death by
her husband (Sept. 6,
1995); her son, Lester Jr
(Feb. 11, 2019); sisters,
Burnadine Kohn and Vivi-
an Kinney and her
parents.
Memorials are pre-
ferred in her name to the
Persilla Watts Cemetery.
Funeral services were
held at 11:00 a.m. Mon-
day, Jan. 3 at First Luth-
eran Church in Rugby
with spring burial in the
Persilla Watts Cemetery,
Rugby. Pastor Sharon
