Leona Volk, age 80, of
Martin, ND, passed away
peacefully on September
20, 2021. Leona was born
on February 21, 1941, in
Minot, ND, to Clemence
and Margaret (Bartsch)
Schatz. She grew up on a
farm in the Bergen area
where she attended coun-
try school. Later they
moved to Balfour, ND
where she attended
school. She started her
first job at Weidler’s Cafe
where she witnessed how
good food not only
brought joy and satisfac-
tion but also brought peo-
ple together. On Sep-
tember 7, 1959, Leona
married the love of her
life, Emanuel Volk in Bal-
four, ND. They moved to
Drake, ND, where she
worked as a telephone
operator. For a short time
they moved to Harvey,
ND, and in 1970 they pur-
chased their current farm-
stead near Martin, ND.
Leona and Emanuel
served as Ma and Pa for
numerous SEARCH for
Christian Maturity re-
treats; thus, informally
adopting numerous other
children, especially close
are Jesse and Anita Zapa-
ta, Donna, TX. Love for
their German heritage
gave the children an idea
to send them on a dream
trip to Germany, Austria,
and France for their 40th
anniversary. Besides mak-
ing beautiful music and
reciting many prayers
with Emanuel, parenting
and grandparenting were
her joy, and all the
grandchildren and great
grandchildren knew she
liked to joke a lot. Anoth-
er joy of hers was baking,
and she was known to
have the best “buns” in
town! Leona was a
member of St. Cecilia
Catholic Church in Har-
vey, where she was a
member of Catholic
Daughters of America and
had also recently joined
the widows’ group which
she enjoyed going to. She
was also a member of the
Harvey Eagles. Leona,
throughout the years, had
various jobs to help sup-
port the family, such as
waitress, clerk, bus driver,
CCD coordinator, and
cook. In retirement she
enjoyed putting jigsaw
puzzles together, as well
as more fervently praying.
She is survived by her
