Ken Schmaltz

Ken Schmaltz, 71, of
Ocean Park, Wash., died
Thursday, Sept. 2 at his
home.
Ken was born Aug. 16,
1950 to Daniel and
Francis (Axtman)
Schmaltz. He grew up in
Balta and graduated from
Balta High School in
1968. He worked for
Great Plains Lumber in
Harvey. In the fall of
1968, he moved to Seattle,
Wash., where he started a
construction cement com-
pany for 15 years before
moving to Long Beach,
Wash. There, he owned a
motel and R.V. park for 18
years before moving to
Ocean Park, still doing
carpentry work until his
health failed.
Ken was on dialysis for
five years before he re-
ceived a new kidney,
which failed after 11
years. He also suffered
from Parkinson’s Disease
and cancer.
He is survived by: his
wife of 48 years, Lula
(Lou); a stepdaughter,
Char, of Long Beach and a
granddaughter, Lindsey,
of Seattle. His siblings
Marion Jensen of Pasco,
Wash., Leonard Schmaltz
of Grand Forks, Loretta
Weinmann of Devils Lake
and Patty Schmaltz,
Goodlettsville, Tenn. also
survive him, along with
16 nieces and nephews
and 19 great-nieces and
great-nephews.
He is preceded in death
by: his parents Daniel and
Francis Schmaltz, stepson
Gene Hodges, brothers
Raymond and Robert
Schmaltz and sister Lor-
raine Wentz.
A funeral will take
place at a later date.
