Nov. 3, 1939-Aug. 10, 2021

James Roy Selensky en-

tered his heavenly home

on Tuesday, August 10,

2021, at the age of 81

years surrounded by his

wife and family at the

Heart of America Medical

Center in Rugby, North

James was born on No-

vember 3, 1939 in Rugby,

North Dakota to Bernard

“Ben” and Barbara (Hil-

zendager) Selensky. He

was the 10th of 11 chil-

James grew up on the

family farm with his

brothers and sisters and

attended school one mile

north of the farm where

he still resided today. In

his early teens, James and

his brothers Edward,

Fred, Jacob and Steve

started a band “The Selen-

sky Brothers.” They

played the best old-time

music for many weddings

and parties. James played

the accordion, saxophone,

clarinet and piano, all

self-taught! After they re-

tired the band, he contin-

ued to play the accordion

from time to time just for

old time’s sake. He was an

avid supporter of Little

Flower Catholic School

and a member of Little

Flower Catholic Church

and the Knights of

James met Bernice Volk

and did not want to take

any chances, so he was

united in marriage to the

love of his life on April

24, 1962, at Sts. Peter and

Paul Catholic Church in

Karlsruhe, ND. The cou-

ple lived on the family

farm and proudly raised

their 12 children. Togeth-

er, they operated a dairy

business from 1962 to

2007. They farmed the

land, planted a large gar-

den every year and raised

beef cows, feeder calves,

chickens, ducks, geese

and pigs. He enjoyed go-

ing to the sales ring, hunt-

ing, fishing, trapping and

anything outdoors! A spe-

cial gift James had was

visiting with people en-

riching those who

listened with his

quick-witted humor, life

lessons, frequent wisdom

or stories of the good ‘ol

days always followed by

his well-known smirk!

James’ greatest joy was

working with his kids on

the farm and was proud to

see them grow into the

adults they are today,

watching them raise his

grandchildren and great

grandchildren. He was so

proud of his wife and

their many accomplish-

ments together including

their ever-growing family

who will miss him dearly.
