Rose (Volk) Durbin

Rose Durbin, 96, passed

from this world on May

28, 2021, at Petersburg

Medical Center, Peters-

burg, Alaska.

Rose Axtman was born

at home on the family

farm near Balta, ND to

Frank Axtman and Mag-

dalena Bohl on August 17,

1924. She was the seventh

child in a family of eight.

Grade school was a one

room country school. She

graduated from Balta High


She went on to nurse’s

training at Mercy Hospital

at Williston, but left after

one year and returned

home. She worked at

several jobs and eventual-

ly the grocery store where

she met Ed Volk, her fu-

ture husband. They were

married on November 25,

1947 and together they

had twelve children.

Besides raising her large

family she worked in hos-

pitals for thirteen years.

In 1985, Rose and Ed

traveled to Petersburg to

visit three of their sons

who were working here.

After more visits they

moved to Petersburg in


In 1991, Ed was diag-

nosed with cancer and

they returned to ND, for

medical care in Fargo. Ed

passed in January 1992.

Rose returned to Peters-

burg and lived in Moun-

tain View Manor (Senior

Living Center) for thirteen


Rose and Mike Durbin

got together and they were

married on June 25, 2004.

Rose was preceded in

death by: her mother, fa-

ther; sons, Cyril, Walter

and Kevin; grandson

Jeremy Brekken and six

brothers and sisters.

She is survived by: hus-

band Mike; children Don-

na (Larry) Herslip, Brenda

(Larry) Sullivan, Maggie

(Greg) Brekken, Sandy

Haugen, Bob (Anne), Tom

(Gaylen), Ed Jr. (Renee),

Dan (Denise), Lisa;

daughter-in-law Sandy

Volk; 30 grandchildren

and numerous great

grandchildren, and sister


Services were held at

St. Catherine’s Catholic

Church in Petersburg on

Thursday, June 17.
