Shirley Ann Burns
June 1, 1940 – Feb. 2, 2021
Shirley Ann Burns, the
daughter of Alfred and
Olena (Asson) Johnson
was born on June 1, 1940
in Bottineau, North Dako-
ta. She went to her
heavenly home at the age
of 80 on Tuesday, Febru-
ary 2, 2021 at her family
home in Rugby, North
Dakota.
Shirley was raised in
Bottineau and her father
was a railroad worker, so
she attended my different
schools in Bottineau,
Sarles and York areas.
Shirley was united in
marriage to Duane Burns
on in June of 1959. To-
gether they were blessed
with two daughters, Bren-
da and JoAnn, whom she
adored. She was so hap-
py and proud when her
grandchildren were born,
Sammy and Jonathon and
later her great grandson,
Grayson. She worked in
the dietary departments at
both the Heart of America
Medical Center and the
Haaland Home in Rugby.
She loved all the residents
she worked with. If any-
one needed a laugh, a hug
or some love, Shirley had
enough to go around. She
loved to play cards, espe-
cially rummy with her
best friend, Eva Paulson.
Other things she enjoyed
and loved was camping,
especially shopping and
visiting wherever she
went. Shirley could put a
smile on your face if she
knew you or not. She at-
tended the Knox Lutheran
Church, when her
daughter was the minister
there and attended Glad
Tidings Assembly of God
Church in Rugby, when
she was able. She will be
missed by her family and
friends.
Shirley is survived by
her husband, Duane of
Rugby, daughter, JoAnn
Burns; grandson,
Jonathon (Shelby Groth)
Burns; great grandson,
Grayson Burns, all of Rug-
by; several nieces,
nephews; other relatives
and friends. She was pre-
ceded in death by her
daughter, Brenda Burns;
grandson, Sammy; sisters,
Adeline Erb and Delores
Harmel; brothers in in-
fancy; her
brothers-in-law, Raymond
Arlien, Kenny Erb and
LaVerne Harmel; her
parents and in-laws,
Roger and Patsy Burns.
Funeral services were
held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday,
February 7 at Glad Tid-
ings Assembly of God
Church in Rugby with

ley Brethan Cemetery in
York. Pastor Nathan
Steen, officiating.
