Lorraine Frances Welk,
the daughter of Martin
and Mable (Westgard)
Fosness was born on
January 14, 1927 in Pierce
County, North Dakota.
She died at the age of 93
years on Wednesday,
January 6, 2021 at the
Heart of America Care
Center in Rugby, North
Dakota.
Lorraine was the fourth
of six children and was
raised on her family farm
near Barton, North Dako-
ta. She graduated from
Barton High School in
1945. On November 2,
1945, she was united in
marriage to Carl C. Welk
in her family farm home.
In the spring of 1946, the
couple purchased a farm
west of Barton where they
made their home, raised
their family, farmed and
ranched for 39 years. The
couple retired and lived
in Barton for 20 years be-
fore moving to Rugby in
2005. Carl died on June
3, 2006. Lorraine was a
member of St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Wil-
low City. She enjoyed
cooking, baking and
spending time with her
grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
Lorraine is survived by
her children, Marlin (Bea)
of Rugby and their chil-
dren, Lindee Welk (Brad
Douglas) and Kelly
(Megan) Welk; Linda
(Ron) Wolf of Fargo and
their children, Chad
(Jaime) Wolf, Brandi
(Stewart) Pierce and Teri
(Danny) Kava; Wayne
(Barb) of Willow City and
their children, Leslie
(Mike) Dartt, Myron (Tabi-
tha) Welk and Derick
Welk; and Jay (Tracie) of
Willow City and their
children, Kirsten (Kyle)
Hass and Jayden
(Breanne) Welk; 20 great
grandchildren and one
great-great grandchild; si-
blings, Merle Ness and El-
vera Fedje; nieces,
nephews; other relatives
and friends. She was pre-
ceded in death by her
parents Martin and Mabel
Fosness, two brothers,
Leonard Fosness and Earl
Fossness and one sister,
Mavis Young.
Funeral services will be
held at 11:00 a.m. Satur-
day, January 16 at St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Rug-
by with burial at 12:00
noon in the Marker
Cemetery, rural Rugby.
Pastor Joshua Reimche,
officiating.
Visitation was from
4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Fri-
day, January 15 with a
prayer service and sharing
of memories that began at
6:00 p.m. at the Anderson
Funeral Home in Rugby.
Visitation will continue
on Saturday for one hour
prior to the time of ser-
vices at the church.
