Leonard Wangler

Leonard Wangler, 82, of Balta, ND died on Wednesday May 20, 2020 at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care Center. He was born on February 8, 1938 in the Pierce County, North Dakota home of his parents, Ferdinand and Veronica (Hoffert) Wangler.

He was raised in the home of his parents and received his education at the Balta School and furthered his education at a preparatory School of Agriculture in Fargo, North Dakota. A lifelong Balta resident, he married October 19th, 1959, the love of his life, Theresa Kuntz of Rugby at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. Leonard worked for Rugby Equipment driving truck for 20 years and later for Buchl Implement and for Mayo Construction for many years. During that time, he also started his own hay grinding business which he worked at until his retirement. Hard and dirty work, but he loved it.

As his children were growing up, he enjoyed buying day-old calves to feed, and the family was all involved in helping with the feedings. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing games with his children. After his children were grown and gone, he developed a love for spending time outside in the spring and summer and spent a lot of time planting and taking care of his flower beds. Leonard took joy in seeing the many birds that would gather around the flowers and the many birdhouses and feeders he had placed around the yard. He spent many hours mowing the grass around town to make sure everything looked nice and neat, even the vacant lots. He had a great fondness taking care of his cats and kittens. He was partial to watching Polka Parties on Mollie B, reading loved spending time with his family and was especially fond of holding all the babies.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theresa; his children, Fred (Charlotte), Casselton, ND, Sandy (Brian) Olsen, Bismarck, Kevin, Balta, Steven (Beth) Bismarck, Debbie (Lawrence) Mattern, Rugby, ND, Laurie (Jay) Schepp, Bismarck and Patti (Mike) Yoder, Devils Lake, ND; 11 grandchildren, Karl and Tyler Olsen, Bismarck, Erica Mattern, Christy (Lee) Zinck, Matthew Mattern, Carson Mattern and Katelyn Mattern all Rugby, Jacob and Rachael Schepp Bismarck, Kaedyn and Conner Wangler Bismarck; great grandchildren, Brynlee, Wyatt and Quynn Zinck, Rugby; siblings Delores McDowell, Iberia, MO, Bernice (Leo) Broden, Devils Lake, ND, Richard (Mary) Wangler, Rugby,ND, Rita (Wesley) Muffenbier, Balta, ND, Carol (Joe) Goldade, Velva, ND, Rose (Richard) Aberle, Minot, ND, James (Sandy) Wangler, El Cajjon, CA, and Eugene (Melodye) Wangler, Denver, CO; an uncle, Donald (Regina) Hoffert, Devils Lake; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant granddaughter, Briana Wangler.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 26th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Balta with burial in the church cemetery. Father Franklin Miller, Celebrant
