Lugard Schaan, age 98, passed away on April 14th, 2020 in Brandon, Fl, at the home of her daughter Dianne. She was the youngest and last surviving of the 11 children of Frank and Caroline Deck of Harvey, ND.
Born in 1921 she grew up on a farm near Selz, ND, before moving to Harvey, ND in 1934. She graduated from Harvey High School in 1939. She married Frank Schaan in 1941, living for a time in Rugby, Towner, Watford City, and Minnewaukan, They moved to the family farm, near Balta, in 1944 and lived there until moving to Las Vegas in 1993. They traveled throughout the United States and frequently
visited her sisters in Portland. Oregon. Overseas travels were to England and Korea to visit a son and daughter’s family serving in the military. After Frank passed away in 1998, Lugard also lived in Benson, MN , Las Vegas, and Rugby. She reconnected with many relatives and friends while living ather home in Rugby. She was living with her daughter in Florida for the past three years. Lugard enjoyed reading, crafting, playing her organ, decorating and doing crossword puzzles. Lugard was a wife, mother of 6 and aunt to 110 nieces and nephews (Deck-47, Schaan-63).
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank in 1998, a son Darrell in 1955, and all her siblings. She is survived by her son Dennis (Nancy) of Las Vegas, NV; Donald (Leslie) of San Francisco, CA; Dean (Anna) of Elizabeth City, NC; daughters, Dianne Veatch of Brandon, FL; and Doris Jean (Mark) Rittenour of Benson, MN; sister-in-law Bernie (John) Duchscher of Rugby, ND; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grand children.
Mass and burial will be in Balta, ND later this year.
