Elizabeth M. “Betty” (Senger) Burgard

July 20, 1927 – May 4, 2020

Elizabeth M. “Betty” (Senger) Burgard, the daughter of Joseph W. and Elizabeth (Thomas) Senger was born in the rural Orrin, North Dakota home of her parents on July 20, 1927. She died at the age of 92 years on Monday, May 4, 2020 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Betty was raised in the home of her parents and attended the Orrin School through the sixth grade, taking over the household chores due to the decline of her mother’s health. On June 23, 1953, Betty was united in marriage to Thomas P. Burgard at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin. To this union, they were blessed with five children. The couple made their home, raised their family, farmed and attended to a small dairy herd on the Burgard family farm in Orrin. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she worked together with Tom on the farm from the beginning until retiring into Rugby in 1991.

Betty was a great cook and gardener. Her fridge was always full and was ready to host family and friends who would stop by to visit on a moment’s notice. She was famous for her pickles, German potato salad and homemade buns. She had a deep love for her home church, Sacred Heart and was an active member of its Confraternity of Christian Mothers and sang in the choir for many years. She enjoyed playing

cards, being a gracious hostess and visiting with family and friends. Betty has made her home at the care center since 2014. Tom died April 6, 2018 at the age of 91 years.
