Christ Gottlieb Ley

Christ Gottlieb Ley was born October 4, 1930 in Wishek, ND to Gottlieb J. and Amelia R. (Boettcher) Ley. He graduated from Wishek High School in 1949. He attended college in Ellendale and Bottineau and graduated from Valley City Teachers’ College in 1959. During this time, he was also in the North Dakota National Guard from 1947-1950, and the United States Army (1951-1953) where he was a cryptographer
during the Korean War.
After graduation, Chris taught and coached in Sharon, North Dakota for one year. He married Patricia L. Buttke in Valley City August 28, 1960 and moved to Rugby where he taught physical science,
chemistry, and physics at Rugby High School. He also coached football, basketball and track until his retirement in 1989. Chris and Pat moved to Valley City in 1996 and returned to Rugby in 2007. They have been spending winters in Arizona since 1990.
Chris was a member of First Lutheran Church, American Legion, North Dakota High School Activity Association, Masons and Eagles. Chris had many interests, including all sports (playing, coaching, officiating, spectator), especially golf in his retirement years. He also
enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Chris is survived by his wife Pat, son Roger (wife Lisa) in Boerne, Texas, grandsons Austin (Fort Worth, Texas) and Camren (Boerne, Texas), daughter Beth Knotts (husband Michael) in Longville, Minnesota, son Mark in Rugby, granddaughter Tiffany (Grand Forks), sisters Ida Kramer in Bismarck and Violet Harrington in Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Allen and Ervin, and sisters Esther and Dora.
A Memorial Service is tentatively planned for Saturday, June 22 at First Lutheran Church in Rugby at 10:30 am. Contact the Church for further details. Memorials may be directed to the Chris Ley Memorial at Rugby High School.
