Gary Frank Grossman was born April 12, 1945 in Rugby, ND to Joseph and Agnes (Wolf) Grossman. He was raised on the family farm west of Esmond. Gary was united in marriage to Cecilia Mattern on January 20, 1968 at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Fulda, ND. To this union, five children were born: Tina, Kory, Renae, Lee and Kristin.
Gary started working construction at the age of 17. As a Union Iron Worker (Local 793), he helped construct many of North Dakota’s major energy projects and coal gasification plants, in addition to several iconic landmarks, including long-span river bridges. He also worked on military defense projects on both air force bases and numerous missile sites throughout the state. Gary also farmed in the Esmond area until 1987. He retired from ironworking in the early 1990’s and moved to Bismarck to be closer to his children. He then worked for several more years, transporting campers for Capital RV. Gary was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Bismarck, and St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, traveling, watching old western movies, playing cards and visiting with
family and friends. His happiest moments were sharing time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their many activities.
